L-
IMHO, I don't think that anything but 'added' sub-q fat mass is going to up-regulate leptin such that it will mitigate the pernicuous effects of dieting or its associated sequalae. While we do get a transient rise in plasma insulin and leptin during a refeed/AR/binge, it is the sub-q component that is mostly at the controls. Nonetheless, I do believe that with proper supplementation, there is a place for refeeds etc. What they can do, through transient upregulation, is allow for increased time to enable psychological cognitive mechanisms to be re-instantiated such that hardcore dieting (i.e., for competition purposes) can be reorganized. In dieting to extreme levels, or staying at relative and/or absolute extreme levels, we are co-opting the bodies normal metabolic regulatory systems by using higher-order cognitive mechanisms in the neocortex. I have outlined the roll of refeeds and their benefits in a number of threads over the years, and little has changed with the exception that more neuropeptides and refeed schemes are being added to the overall regulatory model.

PS: in regards to your other noted benefits of refeeds, I do agree. In particular transient effects on NPY firing and possible acute anabolism at the very least serving to maintain eubolic status.
