Ok guys, today I'll throw alot of reading for you. It's a short one, first of 5 thread I'll post on nutrition forum today. ENJOY!
Nutrition 101!
1. As I don’t know that much about your personal knowledge about nutrition, I’ll act like you’re all beginners (No offense here, just to make sure that we’ll be covering all important aspect of it...)
Let’s start with cal counts. If you don’t know the value of some nutrient,
1gr of protein =4cal
1gr of carbs =4cal
1gr of alcohol =7cal and,
1gr of fat =9cal
According to this little scheme, peoples who just rely on calories count can be dead wrong. Let’s take a quick example: the food nutrition value label on a single can of tuna look like this: nutrition fact per ½ can, cal: 60, fat .5gr, protein 15gr carbs 0gr. It’s easy to do the calculation for the whole can, everything x2!
So, cal 120
Fat 1gr
Protein 30gr
Carbs 0grm
If you count right, protein 30gr x 4cal/gram =120cal
Fat 1gr x9cal/gram =9cal
Total must be 129cal not 120cal... (This is not the point here)
If you eat 2 cans of tuna it will be 258cal total but, only two gram of fat!
If, in other end, you eat a single table spoon of butter, it’s about 10gr of fat so, 10gr x9cal/gram =90cal.
Now, let’s compare the two options with this twist, ask girls: would you rather choose to ingest 258cal or 90cal? They’re all gonna choose 90cal. Then you must ask yourself what will cause the most damage, 2gram of fat or 10gram of fat? This is the real question here! Calories count can be misleading sometimes, peoples must learn how to use logic over plain numbers when making choices...
Till next time,
Sly.
When people count calories and make all food decisions based solely on calories they are making a decision that makes about as much sense as this. "Although extensive amounts of time are used to study the specific characteristics and functions of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids in biochemistry, once they enter my stomach my body will partition them all the same and they all do the same thing."

I like to view it as a hierarchy of how well you make nutrition choices:
From best to worst:
1) Doing macronutrient percentages (e.g. 40protein/40carbs/20fat) and counting calories
2) Counting calories
3) Eyeballing it or thinking about it without significant accuracy (e.g. I think I ate enough carbs today, I need more protein, etc.)
4) Not doing anything, eating what you want when you want (99% of the world's population)
A step from what most people are doing (4) to (2) is an improvement in my eyes. Not the best solution, but better than what they were doing before. With time, they'll move to (1)
