Hey guys need opinions on training past the pain. I used to go heavy, but my shoulder just want let me do it no more. So my question is im basically into bodybuilding do you think i'd get good growth as well as shape by using a lil lighter weight, more reps maybe training to failure? Any info is much appreciated guys Good looking out!!!

Hey bro, sorry to hear about the injury. If it were e, I wouldn't push it too too hard, and I would stay light. Light lifting is going to result in preserving more muscle than trying to go to heavy, worsening your injury and then not being able to lift at all.

Did you see a doctor that said it was torn or you just going by how you feel? I would go see the doc and have it fixed ASAP.

I actually hurt it in jail a long time ago while doing pushups everyday. I never payed no attention to it and kept doing them. Its been hurting for years but i've never stopped the training. I have been to the docs numerous times and I have had 3 cortizone shots in it. Doctor jumps all over me when I go she actually scheduled me for an MRI but I never did it. I can't afford to have a surgery if I did i'd be off of work and I can't do that. And I can't stop lifting its a part of my life and something I love to do. So I thought of maybe just going a lil' lighter to failure maybe thats why I need some opinions. Thanks I appreciate all the help I can get...

I have no experience with torn rotator cuffs. What I do know is that muscle tears and training hard don't go together. Any experienced lifter will tell you. Take it easy and you'll recover better and faster, with less permanent ill effects.

The link above is a blog post by a pretty successful powerlifter that recovered from a Pec tear after surgery to hit PRs. Obviously a Pec tear is different from a rotator, but it might give you some useful training ideas to reach your goals without aggrevating the injury. I'm no MD, but I would expect pec tears and rotator tears to have some similar training restrictions.

I have had torn quads and 2 small rotator cuff tears with no surgery. Depending on how bad the tears are. Rotator cuff injuries can be of many types. Small partial tears can often be rehabed by going light and using specific exercises especially the external rotators. I had an avulsion fraction completely tearing the triceps from the olecranon and surgery was my only option. Best of luck and happy healing.

The first step you should consider is to have the MRI to find out what you are dealing with. Don't guess ! Go from there. I tore my RTC tendon and bicep tendon off the bone a year ago Sept. Had the surgery and have completely recovered and now delt is more developed than ever. Bicep is getting there. The rehab is critical and yes small tears can be treated with rehab often but you can't know until you get the scan. If you ingnore it and continue to train hard you will tear it completely as I did. One thing I learned reading an article by Branch Warren and confirmed by my rehab people was when you have an injury on one side keep training the other side best you can and the atrophy in the injured side will be much less. Only till you can heal so you won't grow uneven. Has to do with blood flow and hormones. This has bothered you for years, it can only get worse if you don't address it.Think of it this way, work on your quads till you heal most of us can use some targeted quad training to bring them up.BTW the layoff for RTC repair is about 6 momnths. I literally cried at the doc's office but injuries are a part of this lifestyle and most of us will go through it. Good luck my friend !

Mine are torn and my shoulders pop out because of it. PT helped a lot but I still have to b very careful, I never go heavy and nothing behind the head. I hurt my left one today lifting off the bench. I'm in the same boat as u. If I have surgery I'm down for like 6 months and I really can't do that right now. It would b nice to have them fixed though two years ago they both popped out when I was snowboarding, could barely wipe my own ass for weeks

I fully believe in PT, Its what I do:) I have helped many recover from all types of injuries. Most Docs send a person to PT first before they have an MRI, because of the cost. We can usually tell in 2-6 sessions weather we can help. However, PT is expensive.

Did you have an mri ? I tore my shoulder from the bone back in 2003. The funny thing is i didn't know it! I was going to therapy cuz it happend at work .the therapist was working with my shoulder and was pulling on it. (by the way it didn't hurt). He freaked out! He was pulling it completely out of the socket. He called the nurse in to see. They couldn't believe i wasn't in pain! Of course he wouldn't see me any more , i had to go see a surgeon. That's when i found out how bad it was. Also , because i waited so long the bone had chipped a lot

So ,they had to shave down the bone also. I used before then for a long time. It would come out of socket a lot. One night i fell asleep with my bad arm on the pillow under my head and my opposite arm at my side.well when i woke up i couldnt get up!lol i had to call someone to roll me over! The pain was crazy! Anyway the moral of the story is the longer you wait to get it fixed the more damage is being done.then the longer it will be for recovery!!

One more thing, ease up on the bench and do more pushups . Will help strengthen without all the added weight and pressure. There many variations you can do. Look into p90x. You can do all the variation and have a killer workout! Promise

Yes I've had a couple MRI's done they put some ink in my shoulder to see how bad the tears were. My problem is I gave a very limited range of motion.., and same thing if I fall asleep w hand under pillow ill b hurting for a week. The bands help a lot w pt. right now I'm at s point where they are feeling pretty good but as soon as they pop out ill b back to square one. They come out at work or sometimes when training if I throw a wild punch they'll come out or I've even been punched in the shoulder and they've come out. It hurts when they come out I gave to catch my breath then pop them back in usually just lift it or have someone lift it

hello, one thing you dont want to hear, but i will say anyway, is you need to take some time off for that to heal, not using light weights or push ups that will contiue to aggravate the condition. 4 to 6 wks off shoulder or bench work ..ice and ibuprofin, then start with some general rehab work there are various excersizes to get blood flowing and help to stretch the tendons again. i had a torn rotater cuff in 2010 and couldnt even lift my arm . there are 4 tendons /muscles that support the shoulder .mine was torn in the front ,had to have surgery, cut throught the delt go under the pec and re attach the tendon to the humous bone .extremely painful recovery ,did i say extremely painful! 8 wks in a sling then rehab .took probably 6 months before i could even lift 10 lbs over my head . i am 54 yrs of age now and that shoulder is good as ever. im not a dr. but it sounds like a strain or tendonitis which without rest will not get better. if you keep pushing with a strain it could tear . just my 2 cents and personal experience .

Sorry to hear this news. I have no experience with shoulder injury. But I have had a lot of experience doing squats. Maybe let those shoulders rest a while and let your legs show you who's boss? Good luck buddy.
