Standard practice, as well as science, suggests that for optimum muscle recovery, you should consume 40-60 grams of quick-absorbing protein within 30-60 minutes after lifting.

Interestingly, 2 guys that keep me humble in the gym, in both strength and physique, have independently told me that they utilize a quick-absorbing protein 20-30 min before lifting, and don't particularly worry about it immediately post-workout. This is the first time I have heard experienced bodybuilders say whey before a workout is better than whey after a workout. Anyone else feel this way?

I've heard of people doing before and after. After makes more sense to me as you need to give your muscle the stuff to repair. Maybe before helps repair as they are torn??

I've read multiple studies on the subject and there is no compelling evidence that suggests consuming protein before working out has any significant effect on protein synthesis.

Also, the time frame of absorption between different types of whey protein is such a miniscule number that its nothing you should really concern yourself with. Seeing that its liquid it makes it into your stomach quickly where the pepsinogen can begin to break it down the protein is administered via the small intestines in the bloodstream at about the same rate as any protein powder that has been mixed with water.

Thanks for the solid answer bro!

i always drink it after, but i find sometimes that if i drink it before it kinda fuels me for my workout as well. its usually only if im hungry and dont have time to eat anything due to timing.

I've heard mix review on having both before and after. I prefer to have a solid
reg meal with carbs prior to workout and then 50-60g of protein after workout.

Then about 60-90 after that I have my next regular meal as my body is ready
for real food by then. This works whether bulking or cutting for me.

I like to drink some bcaas during, but to be honest do not usually take in protein within an hour after working out. 1. After I work out I'm usually not immediately hungry. 2. No excuse for not doing the protein shake.

Nutrient timing definately interests me though. Ive also read its important to injest carbs immediately after a workout because it will restore glycogen levels and also increases glycogen storage, and therefore gives your muscles more volume and endurance.
